Hebridreaming

Managed to squeeze in a short trip to one of my favourite places to surf and kite in the UK, the Outer Hebrides. It never ceases to amaze me the potential of this place. If you've never been then you owe it to yourself to go! A great place to stay is Galson Farm B&B.

F-One 2014

Whilst it seems only yesterday that we were getting excited about the release of the Bandit 6, the time of year has come once again for us to usher in a bevvy of new luvvlies in the form of the Bandit 2014 (no, it is not the Bandit 7!). Since the release of the Bandit 5, which was a significant departure from the B4, the changes to the kite have been iterative, subtle and ultimately refinements of a great design. In fact, the design is now so good that I always fear they'll change it for the sake of changing it.

F-One have retained the effective two pulley simple bridle.

IKSURFMAG editor Rou Chater was at the dealer meeting in Mauritius and has crafted a great overview of the 2014 kites that you can read here.

Clearly the most significant change has been a move to using the new Technoforce fabric from Teijin - providing added strength. At the bar end of things F-One have finally moved to a push-away QR system - something that will be available in early 2014 and retrofittable to older bars, providing a nice upgrade should you wish it. Oh, and they come in some nice new colours too!

I'll post a review of the 2014 Bandit in a few weeks once they make their way into the UK, but needless to say I'm pretty excited to get under one.

The Long Hot Summer

It has been a bit of a slow summer (understatement) here on the NE Coast of Scotland, with scorchisn temps, but very little wind and waves on offer. Even my favourite alternative activity of freediving has been limited due to ear infections caused by my advanced surfers' ear. Still, at least a trip to Indo made up for it - scoring waves everyday for a month! Looking forward to the autumn and the prospect of some decent weather, as well as a trip to Tiree for the BKSA Wavemasters

Hoots Mon

This one has been sitting around on Vimeo for a while and I neglected to upload it. Needless to say air reverses are the flavour of the month. Been a bit slow on the wind front since I got back from Bali so here's hoping for some low pressure soon!

Reversal of Fortunes

The last week has seen some nice onshore days for kiting at Fraserburgh and Philorth - making up somewhat for what has been the worst winter for surf and wind in recent memory. Dusting off the cobwebs and braving the sub-zero temps, I decided to get among it and pull my finger out to learn something new. I've been sporadically trying air reverses on the kite for a while now and decided to dedicate a few sessions to sticking them - especially as the wind was the right direction. Here's the result captured by the GoPro3 on the line mount.

Wavemaster!

My blog has been a bit neglected of late, largely due to the fact that not much has been happening over the summer on the kite and surf front. Fortunately, winter is on the way and both the wind and swell are now making an appearance, so hopefully should have some more to report. I guess my big news is that I finally managed to win the BKSA Wavemasters, which was held at Westward Ho! in October. Having never been to North Devon before I wasn't sure quite what to expect in terms of waves, and with the forecast being a bit changeable making the 650 mile trip was a bit of a gamble. Fortunately the stars aligned and we ran two days of competition in overhead x-onshore conditions, mostly on 7 and 9m kites. Despite riding in the wrong heat on day 1 (two George's in the comp!) I managed to secure a first place finish on both days to take the overall Wavemaster title. It was great to ride against my good friend Stubbie in the final on both days! Thanks to the BKSA for putting on a great event, to F-One for their continued support, to Ding at Supersaturated for the pics, and to all the great people I met over the course of the week.
